Train passengers can expect delays and some cancellations on South Western Railway today following a lineside fire at London Waterloo yesterday.

Tickets are being accepted on local buses, CrossCountry, Great Western Railway, Southern and London Underground services.

All platforms at Waterloo have reopened but cancellations are to be expected throughout this morning's service because a large amount of trains are not in the right place. The fire yesterday caused significant damage to the signalling system.

Yesterday the train company said services running across the whole South Western Railway network may be cancelled, delayed or revised.

Many services heading to and from Weymouth were affected, and people are still being urged to check before they travel.

SWR said that the fire damaged a signalling system leading to track circuit failures on three of the main lines to and from London Waterloo.

This forces trains to stop and seek verbal permission to continue from signalling staff, leading to delays of at least 10 minutes on each service.

Platforms 1-4 were closed yesterday at Waterloo, with trains being diverted to other platforms.

Network Rail engineering staff later enabled platforms 3-9 at London Waterloo to return to normal working.
