A charity is calling on the public to help them, so they can rescue more cats.

Volunteers of the Weymouth & District Branch of Cats Protection are appealing to the public for help to raise money for a new cat cabin, in order to rescue more local cats.

Gloria Ashwell, volunteer Branch Co-ordinator said: "In 2017, our small branch of volunteers at Weymouth & District Cats protection have helped to rescue and rehome 154 cats and kittens.

"There are so many cats in the area that are made homeless through no fault of their own.

"With one more cat cabin, we could rescue at least another 50 cats that desperately need help this year- probably a lot more if we take in cats and their kittens.

"Every individual matters to us."

Last year, readers of the Dorset Echo responded to an appeal to help a cat named Ashley, an elderly female who came to the branch as a stray and needed an operation due to a serious hip injury.

The operation was successful, and the branch have found a loving home for her.

The charity are now looking for more members of the public to help with their future plans.

Gloria said: "We are appealing to kind members of the public to help us, because cat cabins are not cheap.

"The installation and base in particular are costly and we are asking for help to raise some of the money towards the cost.

"We hope that with another cabin, more if hungry, homeless and unwanted cats and kittens in the area can receive respite whilst we seek to care for them and find them new loving homes.

"We receive no government funding and no matter how big or small, any donation you make will be greatly appreciated."

The branch has launched a Just Giving page where people can donate to their appeal.
