ANOTHER roadworks project is set to cause more disruption in Weymouth.

Wessex Water starts work today (MonJan29) on a four-month maintenance project at Westham Bridge.

Eighteen parking spaces on the bridge are having to be be taken out of use.

The bike shelter is also being moved to allow the works to take place.

It will be moved to a different site, yet to be confirmed, before being brought back when works have finished – although the future management of the facility is 'under review'.

The Wessex Water work, to improve an outfall at the marina will impact on Westwey Road where a lane will be closed.

However Dorset County Council says temporary lights will not be used.

It is understood Wessex Water will be setting up at the site today with maintenance work not beginning until Monday, February 12.

The parking spaces will be out of action from today.

The work is scheduled to finish at the end of May.

A Wessex Water spokesman said: "We are investing £600,000 to make improvements to the existing outfall at the marina. These improvements have been designed to control stormwater flows more effectively.

"This essential work starts on Monday, January 29 and we aim to complete it by the end of May 2018.

"A lane closure will be in place on Westwey Road for the safety of road users and our staff. This may cause traffic delays at peak times and we apologise for any disruption."

The works are taking place while other projects are underway in the borough – including an electricity cable replacement project on Portland Beach Road and Wyke Regis, and Wessex Water replacing an ageing water main under St Thomas Street in the town centre.

Borough council spokesman for Transport and Infrastructure Cllr Colin Huckle said: “We will return the bike shelter once the works are completed.

"I’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to those who use this facility.

“We’re also currently reviewing future management of the bike shelter. We have received concerns about the level of occupancy of the shelter and are looking for ways to ensure it’s used to its maximum capacity.”

The bike storage was installed by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council with funding from Dorset County Council in August 2013.

It was paid for by Dorset County Council out of the £2.4 million it received from the Government's Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF).
