The Mayor and Mayoress of Weymouth and Portland joined veterans for the most important meal of the day at an annual breakfast club.

Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Borough Council Kevin Brookes and the Mayoress Anne Brookes attended the Weymouth and Portland Veterans Breakfast Club at The Riviera.

At the meeting, the mayor discussed his two charities this year, Go Girls, which support women with gynae cancers, and Prostate Cancer UK, which aims to stop men dying from prostate cancer.

Both are his chosen charities for his tenure as mayor.

Speaking of the event, Councillor Brookes said: "I'd heard a bit about the veterans beforehand, and joined their group on Facebook.

"I've followed their progress for a while.

"I decided to go along to the breakfast, and found it was a very comfortable group of people to be around, especially considering I was meeting them for the first time.

"At the event I met an ex-colleague of mine from when I was a prison officer, who has just recently been diagnosed with a rare form of dementia which affects his sight.

"However once he recognised who I was we spent most of the event talking like we were still colleagues.

"It was a really nice, enjoyable event where I felt comfortable, and the people were really nice to meet."

Cllr Brookes went on to say that there will be a free Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) testing day on Saturday, March 17 at Willowbed Hall, Chickerell and that all men should consider having it done.

The breakfast club is a weekly event held at the The Riviera from 9am until 10.30am.

Every week, an English breakfast is served with a side of military chat and banter.
