Purbeck District Council has confirmed it will continue to support the district’s Fairtrade Zone status.

The Purbeck Fairtrade Network was set up in 2002, with the council promoting Fairtrade in the district since 2005.

Beryl Ezzard, council Fairtrade champion, said: “I am delighted that Purbeck District Council will continue its support to Fairtrade.

“The availability of Fairtrade products give quality and choice for local people, encouraging them to shop locally, often for specialist items.

“This is not only good for local businesses but also for those communities in the countries where the products are manufactured.”

The council serves Fairtrade tea and coffee at its meetings and helps the Purbeck Fairtrade Network to produce a directory of local outlets selling Fairtrade products.

Supporting Fairtrade in the district does not involve any financial commitment by the council.

However it does reaffirm support to the Fairtrade Foundation, which ensures workers involved in the production of Fairtrade products receive a decent wage, have a safe working environment and have access to health and education.
