There have been several reports of an earth tremor felt across the county.

The tremor is thought to have struck at around 2.30pm this afternoon.

Richard Sutton, a resident of Crossways, said he felt the tremor whilst at home.

He said: "I felt about two to three seconds of movement and my cabinet started rattling. I went outside and spoke with a neighbour and they said they had felt it as well."

Joanne Thomas, a Weymouth resident, said: "I was sat on the sofa when my whole house shifted from left to right. I thought a train had come in too fast and hit the buffers. My Husband was having an afternoon nap next to me and it woke him. It was really strange."

Alan Davis, a resident of Sutton Poyntz, said: "I was just sitting in the lounge when the couch I was sitting on started moving, then a second time five or six seconds later.

"I thought it must be tame fox or perhaps a badger hiding behind the couch that came in while my wife was outside gardening."

Elaine King, who lives on the outskirts of Weymouth, said: "I also felt the earth move. I went and told my husband what had happened and he said he thought a heavy lorry had passed outside the house."

Hazel Howard said: "My husband and both felt the floor and our chairs move just after 2.30pm. He went out to see if anything was going on in the street because it was so noticeable. He thought it must be an earth tremor."

It is thought to have had a magnitude of 4.4 with its epicentre in Wales.

Echo reporter Jennifer Mulcahey was at her home in Fordington when she felt the tremor.

She said: "It was only a few seconds but the rumbling was very loud.

"I was in the kitchen and I live close to a main road so I thought it was a lorry outside at first, but then the floor started to shake."

The British Geographical Survey announced that the epicentre was approximately 20km north east of Swansea, with 4.4 magnitude at a depth of 7.4km.
