A Weymouth writer has been shortlisted for a national newspaper’s award.

Stuart Lloyd of Great George Street has been shortlisted for The Observer/ Anthony Burgess Prize for Journalism.

The winner will be announced tomorrow.

The prize, now in its sixth year, awards £3,000 for the most lively and thought-provoking reviews of new work in the arts.

Mr Lloyd, a trainee English and politics lecturer, reviewed the film ‘T2: Trainspotting’ by Danny Boyle.

He said: “It’s better written, better directed and better acted, but it’s not the original.”

Mr Lloyd, born and bred in Weymouth, is currently training to become a lecturer at Weymouth College.

He was chosen on a list of seven, which included:

* Olivia Gagan: Boys by Charli XCX

* Zack Hatfield: Welcome to Camp America exhibition by Debi Cornwall

* Felicity James: At My Table by Nigella Lawson

* Rennie McDougall: Utopia by Bjork

* Harry Strawson: Melancholia: A Sebald Variation exhibition

* Daniel Davis Wood: Bluets by Maggie Nelson

Speaking of his nomination, Mr Lloyd said: “I was told by a private email that I had been shortlisted.

“I have always had amazing ideas but never completed them.

“I wanted to finally finish something.

“Ironically, the one time I did finish something, I’ve been shortlisted for it.”

The prizes are presented by the International Anthony Burgess Foundation and the Observer, in association with the international centre for literacy and free expression, Free Word.

The seven shortlisted pieces were selected by a distinguished panel of judges including arts editor of the Observer Sarah Donaldson, book and arts publicist Liz Sich, director of Free World Centre Roma Backhouse, writer Robert McCrum and deputy director of the Burgess Foundation Will Carr.

The prize received a record number of entries from around the world.

The judges were delighted to read many pieces of exceptional quality on a wide range of subjects, including classical and popular music, television, fine art, book reviews and much more.

Sarah Donaldson said: “This year was the best yet for the Observer/Anthony Burgess prize for arts journalism, in terms of the quantity, quality and the range of entries.

“Stuart Lloyd’s entry- a review of the Danny Boyle film Trainspotting T2 was one that stood out: a lively, heartfelt engagement with a film that has been endlessly written about in the press and online.

“While less polished than some of the other shortlisted entries, Lloyd’s prose made us think anew about Boyle’s sequel and the legacy of the original film.

“We think Anthony Burgess would have approved.”
