It was almost a McDisaster for one branch of a fast-food chain when a burger shortage forced it to temporarily close.

Visitors to the McDonald’s branch at Monkey’s Jump, Dorchester were ‘lovin’ it’ a little too much when the restaurant had to close due to an overwhelming demand for burgers.

It comes after the fast-food giant released a special edition burger which was launched to commemorate the Big Mac burger’s 50th birthday.

The Echo understands staff were sent home from the Dorchester branch on February 11 after the restaurant was forced to shut its doors due to an ‘overwhelming demand’.

A McDonald’s spokesman said the store was reopened after a few hours.

The spokesman said: “We can confirm that due to overwhelming demand our Dorchester restaurant was closed for a few hours over lunch.

Following a stock delivery the restaurant re-opened just before 4pm and continues to be open as usual.”

It was not just Dorchester that was affected by the Grand Mac’s popularity with shortages being reported across the country, including neighbouring Somerset.

The Echo reported today KFC stores in Dorset remain closed due to a shortage of chicken, which the chain attributed to "teething problems" with a new distributor.

The two incidents are not believed to be related.
