Customers of a popular convenience store in Weymouth were shocked to find it closed this morning.

Central Stores, on Radipole Lane in Southill, was shut with a sign posted on the door which read: “This shop will be closed until further notice. I am very sorry I have had to do this and for any inconvenience this will cause you.”

The shop, which usually opens at 6am, opened at 10am after a man appeared at the door to tell the Echo "an issue had been resolved", but declined to comment any further.

A spokesman for Central Convenience Stores said: "We can confirm that the Central Convenience Store in Radipole was closed. We apologise for any inconvenience to local customers.

“The closure was due to discussions with the landlord. We are in discussions with our lawyers on this matter yet the store is now open for business as usual."

Many nearby residents visit the shop every day.

While the shop was closed, one resident said: “We pop in here every day for something or other.

“I feel very sorry for the elderly people who are in the block behind. A lot of them are not strong on their feet and need this shop.”

Another said: "I live just over the road but now I'll have to drive to go and get my paper."
