Cowboys, superheroes, wizards, animals and even Goldielocks were spotted in Dorset today (8) as schools celebrated World Book Day - a week later than expected due to the severe weather.

The majority of Dorset schools were closed last week due to the snow and ice but that didn't stop the children dressing up as their favourite fictional characters this week.

Rodwell Preschool was also celebrating World Book Day yesterday with a host of characters making an appearance.

Manager of the Pre-School, Fiona Chatterton said: "The children have come in lovely costumes and brought in their favourite books for us to read together.

"We have got Snow White, Harry Potter, Peter Rabbit, pirates, characters from Frozen, princess's, a Camel , superheroes, Woody and Goldie locks.
"Thanks to the parents for dressing their children in such lovely costumes.

"We are having a lovely day."

Things were a little different at another Weymouth school. Pupils at Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School and Community Nursery spent the day 'dressing a potato' as their favourite book characters - and there were some amazing creations.

Dorset Echo:

Erica Cousins, PA to the headteacher at the school, said: "Pupils had painted, stuck things on and even clothed potatoes to look like a huge range of book characters. One winner from each class was chosen and they were each given a book as a prize for their original potato character.

"The winning potatoes were Mr Bump, The Gruffalo, The Hungry Caterpillar and Aslan, the lion from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

"The idea to run a creative activity rather than dressing up was instigated by the literacy subject leaders of four local schools who work collaboratively together.

"They decided that the children would enjoy to do a craft activity at home and we were all delighted with the enthusiastic results Our school was so pleased to receive some lovely comments from parents and carers who had enjoyed the 'dress a potato' challenge.

“My children really enjoyed it, it was fun to make something creative together.

“It was great to have an affordable project to do together as a family.”
