A car which went over a cliff at Portland Bill has finally been recovered

A recovery vehicle removed the car which went over a cliff, trapping the driver inside.

The car was reported to have driven over the cliff just after 11pm on Saturday, February 24 near to the obelisk at Portland Bill lighthouse.

The driver was trapped in his car and the police, ambulance, fire and rescue, coastguard and lifeboat crews attended to help the injured Weymouth man from his vehicle at the cliff base.

The man in the car at the time of the crash sustained injuries to his neck, hip and back.

His injuries were serious but not believed to be life-threatening.

Portland Camera Club Photographer Bill Munro was at the scene when the recovery happened.

He said: “I was out there with my brother and his wife.

“I saw the recovery vehicle, which started to move back towards the cliff edge on the east side. I knew I had to act quick.

“Thankfully my camera had its lens on so I was able to zoom in.”

Mr Munro told the Echo that the recovery took place at approximately 3:40pm and took roughly 10 to 15 minutes to recover.

Mr Munro said he saw the recovery company get their vehicle in line, then drop the lines down.

After the car was secured, it was lifted up the side of the cliff and taken to the transporter.

The recovery was carried out by Poole based company Bourne Transport Services.

Dave Parker from Bourne Transport said: “Because of the fragile cliff edge we had to use a large heavy recovery vehicle with crane to reach over and winch the car back to the top.

“Not your normal recovery job, but we were happy to help.”
