DORSET civic chiefs are getting their running shoes on to compete in one of Weymouth’s most prestigious running events.

Debbie Ward, chief executive of Dorset County Council, Matt Prosser, chief executive of, Weymouth and Portland, North and West Dorset Council, Andrew Flockhart, chief executive of Borough of Poole Council and Steve Mackenzie, chief executive of Purbeck District Council, are teaming up to take part in the fourth annual Weymouth half-marathon this Sunday.

The group is undertaking the challenge in aid of People First Dorset’s Friendship Club which brings people of all ages who suffer from learning disabilities together to meet friends through a variety of social activities.

The half-marathon, organised by Just Racing, takes runners on a historical and scenic tour of Weymouth’s dramatic past and landscape - which sees runners run over along the beach road to Overcombe and down the Rodwell Trail to Ferrybridge.

Debbie said: “I love the work that People First Dorset do and met them several years ago when I first arrived in Dorset. Their work is really important for everyone they work and play with, for families and individuals.

“As chief executive of Dorset County Council, I get to meet and work with lots of organisations and some make a big impact when you meet them, People First Dorset made a huge impression.”

“I love the fun they bring along with all the work they do.”

Catherine Bolado, a former Dorset Echo journalist, who is joining the civic bosses in their challenge, added: “I’m delighted to be running for Dorset Friendship Club.”

“This amazing charity changes lives in Dorset, so please show your support by donating and cheering us on this Sunday.”

Catherine helped set up the Our View column, written by Friendship Club members William and Emily, which features in the Dorset Echo every Tuesday.

Last year’s event saw more than 1,000 runners take to the streets in aid of Weldmar Hospicecare.

The half-marathon will take place Sunday, March 18 with more than 1,500 runners expected to take part.
