Every dog has their day - and that day certainly came for one dog and his Dorset owner when they took home a prestigious prize at the largest dog show in the world.

Papillon cross, Vegas and his owner Dawn Weaver of Avalanche Road, Portland made it a show to remember when they joined thousands of other canine-lovers in the West Midlands for Crufts.

Now in its 127th year, the annual international show sees dogs and their owners come from across the globe in the hopes of taking home some of the most coveted prizes in the canine competition world.

Four-year-old Vegas put his best paw forward at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC) taking the course in his stride in the 'medium singles agility' category last Thursday.

The country’s most talented agility dogs and handlers went head-to-head to tackle the course but it was Dawn and Vegas who managed to suitably impress the judges scooping second prize.

The pair missed out of the top spot to Natasha Wise with her dog, Dizzy but for dog trainer Dawn, 54, there was no wiping the smile off her face as her beloved Vegas enjoyed his moment in the spotlight.

"It's great to be involved at Crufts. We won the steeplechase in America and double gold at European Championships.

“Crufts is the best dog show in the world – it’s such a great event," she said.

Dawn has been taking part in agility for more than 30 years and has won titles at prestigious dog championships across the world, including Olympia, through her unique style of handling.

This year, an estimated 22,000 dogs visited the NEC during the four-day event, with a record 3,623 four-legged-friends from 49 countries vying for the chance to win the coveted Best in Show.

During the show, visitors learnt about 200 different breeds at the 'Discover Dogs' zone, cross-breeds competed for the 'Scruffts' crown and the 'Friends for Life' event reminded people about the truly inspiring and unique stories that show dogs at their absolute best.
