Weymouth Half Marathon has been called off due to the forecast snow and ice tomorrow.

It was due to get underway outside the Pavilion tomorrow (Sunday) morning.

Organisers had said earlier they were keeping an eye on the conditions.

However it's now been confirmed the event has been postponed until later in the year.

A Facebook post from organisers Just Racing UK says: "Despite our earlier optimism and commitment to delivering this year’s event, and after continued monitoring of the local weather conditions, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the 2018 Weymouth Half Marathon until 10th June 2018.

"We have been in regular consultation with the Emergency Planning Team (which includes the SW Ambulance Service, Met Office, Police and Highways amongst others) and it is generally considered that the risk to the travelling public and the impact the event could potentially have on the Emergency Services may put lives in danger. With this afternoon’s UK Athletics advice of postponements of events over this weekend being held in areas with weather warnings, and the recent statement issued by the UK Athletics’ Medical Advisor regarding the adverse weather predicted for the next few days, we feel that it is the only course left available to us at this late stage and not one we have made lightly. Please accept our apologies for any disruption that this may have caused.

"Whilst there is no guarantee as to what will happen with the weather, based on the most recent information the current concern is that there will be a frost forming underfoot on the paths before the snowfall which would make running on the ice hazardous.

"All runners have been sent an email with a full explanation and the options available to them – Please contact me directly by email to ensure we are able to action your requests as sometimes they can get missed on social media.

"Whilst we wanted to put on a great event, we absolutely do not want to compromise the safety of participants and spectators nor the local / wider community. We hope you understand and appreciate the difficulty in coming to this decision."
