Flags were proudly raised over Dorset to mark Commonwealth Day.

A host of events took place across the county yesterday to mark ‘Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth,’ an international day to celebrate the Commonwealth.

West Dorset District Council’s ceremony was held at South Walks House in Dorchester and was hosted by West Dorset District Council Chairman, Cllr Peter Shorland.

Weymouth and Portland Mayor, Cllr Kevin Brookes led the flag raising in Weymouth for Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s ceremony at Commercial Road.

A specially written 'Commonwealth Affirmation' was read out at each ceremony before the raising of the Commonwealth flag at 10am.

The Dorset events were part of a global initiative, which the Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth organisation said aimed to see hundreds of Commonwealth flags flown in "significant, strategic and eye-catching positions across the Commonwealth, the United Kingdom and beyond."

More than 850 other Commonwealth flags would be raised in 38 Commonwealth countries.
