WEYMOUTH Beach is getting spruced ahead of the summer season.

The golden sands are shifting in a big operation which has seen diggers and lorries hit the beach this week.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council wants to get the award-winning beach ready before Easter, which represents the beginning of the tourist season.

The beach took a pounding during Storm Emma at the beginning of the month so the work will also help to tidy it up following damage.

The snow and rough seas, combined with a spring tide and an easterly gale, left their own impact on Weymouth, with part of the resort’s award-winning beach swept out to sea or deposited on the Esplanade.

Cllr Richard Kosior, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s spokesman for Tourism, Culture and Harbour, said: “In order to keep out award-winning, blue flag beach in peak condition, we commission levelling and regrading works every year.

"These take place before the start of the busy holiday season.

"Disruption will be kept to a minimum and should be completed by Friday.”
