A popular will be taking to the stage this weekend in aid of charity.

The Encore Singers were formed 20 years ago by Lynn Penman who felt there was an opening for something different in Dorchester. They are a four-part harmony group of nearly fifty singers and their repertoire includes many show songs and popular songs old and new. They have gone from strength to strength under the baton of their musical director, Julia McFarlane.

This weekend the choir will be performing in aid of Dorset County Hospital Charity's Cancer Appeal.

Ms Penman said: “We are so pleased to help raise funds for the Cancer Appeal which is supporting the provision of radiotherapy treatment in Dorchester. This will help many people in Dorset access their treatment locally instead of having to travel long distances.”

Simon Pearson, head of fundraising at Dorset County Hospital said: “We are very grateful to Lynn and the rest of the choir for their support. This kind of event helps enormously because it not only raises much-needed funds but also spreads the word about what the Charity are doing and why we need support from the local community.”

The Cancer Appeal is funding a new Outpatient Department for cancer and haematology patients at Dorset County Hospital. This is part of a project bringing radiotherapy services to Dorchester for the first time. The appeal is also funding improvements to the hospital’s chemotherapy unit which will enable friends and family to sit with patients having treatment.

The concert takes place on Saturday, April 14 at 7.30pm at the United Church in Dorchester. Entry is free but a collection will be made on the night for the Cancer Appeal and all donations will be gratefully received.

Ms Penman added: “If any other organisation would like Encore to support their charity by giving a concert please contact me on 01305 787259.”
