A generous sum of money was donated to two charities at a fair trade shop in Weymouth.

Trustees of The Bridge Fair Trade Shop on Trinity Road came together to present two £250 cheques to The Lantern Trust and Christian Aid.

Linda Perry, a trustee of The Bridge Fair Trade Shop said: “Fairbridge Trust, the charity which runs The Bridge Fair Trade Shop has given a donation of £250 each to The Lantern Trust and to Christian Aid.

“The aim of the trust is to raise money through the sale of fairly traded goods to support charities both locally and overseas working for the relief of poverty. After six months of trading they are pleased to be able to make their first donations and would like to thank all their volunteers and customers who have made this possible. “

Fiona Daborn of Christian Aid said: “It is fantastic and typical of people in Dorset who are extremely generous. I have been left impressed by people’s generosity and how they get stuck into the work Christian Aid does.”

Ms Daborn said the money will go towards progressing the charity’s work in Haiti, where a large number of people are still internally displaced.

Ted Bament,a trustee of The Lantern Trust, said: “It is a fair bit of money that will help people who need support.”

The Lantern Trust helps vulnerable and marginalized people in the Weymouth & Portland.

The Bridge Fair Trade Shop on Trinity Road sells products made in Bali, India, Sri Lanka and Swaziland, which means farmers, producers and artisans get a fair price for their work.
