On your marks, get set, roar - it's time for the Dorchester Lions Fun Run.

The annual event has become bigger and better each year, raising almost £250,000 in its 36 years - with this year expected to be another success.

As in previous years, the run will start from Dorchester Middle School on Coburg Road and will again include a choice of two routes, a timed 10k run and an alternative 2k fun run.

The timed 10k run will take participants round the scenes of Maiden Castle. It has been growing in popularity ever since it was introduced six years ago.

The 2k route will take participants round Poundbury - and people can run, jog or walk and are encouraged to dress up for the occasion. Wheelchair users are also welcome to join in the fun.

People taking part in the event have the opportunity to raise money for a charity of their own choosing.

Andy Rose from the Lions said that all entrants who cross the finish line will be presented with a medal to mark the occasion. Individual 10k category winners will each receive a prize.

The Mayor of Dorchester, Councillor Susie Hosford, will be starting the event and the Fun Run's very own 'Flying Nun' will again be travelling from Falmouth to take part in what will be her 35th year.

The event will be held on Sunday, May 6.

The timed 10k starts at 10.25am and the 2k Fun Run at 1035am.

There will be registration on the day from 9am until 10.15am but the Lions are encouraging all entrants to pre-register to help smooth arrangements on run day.

Andy said: "The Dorchester Lions Fun Run is a well-established community event.

"The 10k timed run and 2k Fun Run ensure that there is an opportunity for all ages and abilities to take part, have fun, enjoy the day - and raise valuable funds for good causes.

"So if you are a student trying to raise funds to go on an expedition within the next year - or getting together with friends and colleagues to form a new support group, or helping your hospital to raise funds for new initiatives - or simply a club, group, organisation or individual wanting to raise funds for your own good cause or charity, then take part in the Fun Run.

"Dorchester Lions will be supporting Dorset Mind West as one of their main beneficiaries of the event."
