Want to be part of the marathon buzz?

Hot on the heels of the London Marathon, organisers of the upcoming Dorchester Marathon are on the lookout for volunteers.

Those who want to be part of the event, but don't want to pound the streets, can help as a marshal around the course, directing runners on their way and encouraging them on.

The event is being organised by members of Casterbridge Rotary Club and White Star Running, a company that specialises in organising rural races.

As well as giving runners a chance to enjoy the beautiful Jurassic countryside, the marathon and half marathon also raise much-needed funds for local groups and charities.

John Adams, chairman of the marathon organising committee, said: “These are great events which runners and their families really enjoy, but they also have a serious side in raising money for groups that need our help.

“Last year’s events meant £3,000 was donated to Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance as well as £10,000 being donated to 26 local charities and good causes based in and around Dorchester.

“The local American Football team, the Jurassic Coast Raptors, are offering volunteers but we will need 100 marshals in total so we are hoping that local people will help us once again as well.”

The Dorchester Marathon and Casterbridge Half Marathon take place on Sunday, May 27.

The organisers are holding briefing meetings for anyone interested in helping out.

They will be held on Monday, April 30 at 6.45pm and Thursday, May 8 from 7.30pm - both at the Colliton Club in Dorchester.
