Runners of all ages braved the sizzling temperatures to raise thousands of pounds for good causes.

More than 300 runners took on the Annual Dorchester Lions’ Fun Run which is now in its 37th year.

Friends and family gathered at Dorchester Middle School to cheers on participants as they set off on the 10km and 2km races on Sunday.

Club president, Tony Howden said although the bank holiday weather was glorious - it was not ideal for the race.

"It's a little warmer than we'd like. We put extra water out on the run and will be keeping an eye on everyone," he said.

As well as battling the heat, 10km runners took on a new and more challenging route this year which wound round Maiden Castle and included some testing inclines.

"It's quite steep up by the castle. It's definitely challenging for the runners - there's much more hilly than in previous years," Tony said.

Tony added the club's goal this year was to attract 300 runners which they achieved.

"We had 280 runner sign up to the 10km ahead of the race and more turn up on the day - we had 220 last year so it's growing," he said.

The race raises funds for local causes and Tony said, although they had yet to tot up a total, the club hoped to raise about £4,000.

For the first year the 10km run was chip timed so runners could get exact race times and try and smash their personal best.

The Mayor of Dorchester, Councillor Susie Hosford, was there to start both races and give the runners her support.

"It's an absolute pleasure to see all these people get top enjoy the weather and raise money for charity. I think the fun run is a real community event - it brings people together, allows them to challenge themselves in a non-competitive way and to raise money for causes they feel passionate about," she said.

Debbie Moore from Royal Manor of Portland Running Club was taking part in the fun run for the second year running.

Before the race she said: "The routes changed so I think it's going to be a more challenging. I'm quite nervous as I'm scared of running in the heat. You've got to love running to take part in things like this but this race is for charity as well which is really nice and it's great to see so many people here." After the race Debbie said she did not manage a personal best as the heat was a factor - but she enjoyed the race nonetheless.

"How beautiful were those views? Absolutely Stunning - loved it - despite the heat," she said.
