THE work of patient groups attached to GP surgeries are to be showcased – and residents are urged to get involved.

Patient Participation Groups (PPG) run in most GP practices across Dorset enabling patients to advise and inform the practice on what matters most to them and helping to identify local health issues.

Networking events have been organised including one in Dorchester featuring short presentations followed by a chance to view the work of groups and find out more.

The events will be opened by John Davey LMC Regional Liaison Adviser (South West) General Medical Council. Light refreshments will be available.

Anyone who would like to find out more about the work of their local PPG or how to get involved will be welcomed. For those unable to attend, information is available via www.dorsetsvision.nhs.uk/involve

The PPG at Royal Crescent Surgery and Preston Road Practice in Weymouth is one example of how a PPG can work well, with more than 100 members.

PPG co-ordinator Tracey Scorer said “PPGs bring so much to a practice, they are our front line, they are the people using the services – telling us what we need to know, what we are doing right and what we are doing wrong. Anyone is welcome; we ask new patients if they would like to join and have lots of forms and posters in our practices. I would encourage everyone to speak to their local practice about how they can get involved.”

The Dorchester event is on Thursday, May 24 from 2pm-4.30pm at the Dorford Centre, Bridport Road. No need to book, but it would help organisers to know how many people are coming. Do this at www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/DK85LYJ or email communciations@dorsetccg.nhs.uk for further information.

Meanwhile, the Royal Crescent and Preston Road Practice in Weymouth is holding a healthy living event at the Park Centre, Chelmsford Street tomorrow from 11am-3pm. It comes after a survey designed by its PPG showed that patients wanted more information on local health services available to them.
