History enthusiasts were transported back in time at the Crabchurch History Talks.

The talks were held at Hope United Reformed Church on Trinity Street, Weymouth.

The speakers were Time Team’s Professor Ronald Hutton, novelist Kit Berry and comedian Bishop Bray.

The talks were meant to take place in March as part of the Crabchurch Conspiracy Commemoration Weekend, which looks back on a savage night of conflict during the English Civil War, but the event was postponed due to bad weather.

Mrs Berry, who is best known for her Stonewylde series of books, opened the event by discussing her new novel set on Portland during the English Civil War. She discussed her efforts to make her new book as historically accurate as possible, before reading a descriptive passage from her debut novel Magus of Stonewylde.

Prof Hutton’s talk was entitled ‘Why the English Revolution Failed’ and transported the audience back to the time of Oliver Cromwell and the uncertainty in Parliament after the Civil War.

Bishop Bray left the audience in stitches as he discussed the differences and similarities between life during the English Civil War and present day.

Jon Dixon, the event’s host, closed the evening by describing the importance of maintaining the town’s history.

Organiser Mark Vine, said: “It went really well, we had the right mix of speakers.

“Ronald is just fantastic, he is a lovely character and really knows his stuff. He’s been involved with Crabchurch since 2013. Kit is fantastic and is working on a screenplay to bring her Stonewylde series to television.

A total of £100 from the event will be donated to Grahame Knott’s Deeper Dorset project, while the rest of the money raised will go towards future Crabchurch events.
