A school is celebrating after finding out its design will be included in the Rodwell Tunnel Mural.

A competition was launched last year encouraging artists of all ages and abilities in Dorset to get behind a project aimed at transforming the Wyke Road tunnel.

The competition was organised by The Friends of Rodwell Trail and Sandsfoot Castle and aimed to turn what has been described as ‘a problem place’ into a ‘place of pride.’

It has been revealed that there were a total of 41 competition entries across its categories.

Year 1 and Year 2 pupils from St Nicholas and St Laurence Primary School won the science category, meaning their Busy Bees design will be included in the final mural.

Mrs Eli Kerr, the school’s art teacher, said: “We took our inspiration from the artist Paul Klee to create a colourful ‘Busy Bees’ mixed media image of a honeycomb. There was already a buzz in school with the Year 3 and 4 production of ‘The Bee Musical’ and lots of the pupils love taking part in Forest School each week, so it was great to combine nature, patterns and science with art.”

The school was awarded a £100 cash prize, which Mrs Kerr says will go towards art materials, so the children can continue to harness their creativity.

Paula Klaentschi, one of the competition's organisers, said: "One of the winning entries by “Busy Bees” Year 1 & 2 from St Nicholas & St Laurence Primary School, Weymouth, has vibrant colours with honey combs and bees. This is the work that Peter Sheridan our expert International Mural Artist considers the most appropriate to take forward with the Young Paint Team in the Tunnel. Thus the inspired preliminary sketch design prepared shows how various other motifs to be incorporated from other Competition Entries. It is design work in progress at this stage and the first iteration and dependant on many factors being resolved before it goes ahead."

Mural artist Peter Sheridan, who works all over the country, painting enormous murals, will be combining all the winning designs, which will be painted inside the Rodwell Tunnel this summer.

As part of the project he will work with a team of local people aged 16-25 in July and August.
