POLICE investigating shots fired in a Weymouth road have arrested a man on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.

However, the 54-year-old Weymouth man has since been released under investigation as police enquiries continue.

Officers also continue to search for another person believed to be involved.

Dorset Police received a report at 5.53pm on Tuesday of shots being fired – possibly from an air weapon – in Marsh Road behind the Asda supermarket in Weymouth.

Part of the road has been cordoned off as part of the investigation.

In an update this morning, Dorset Police said a 54-year-old Weymouth man had been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder and is assisting officers with their enquiries.

Detective Inspector Andrea Power, of Weymouth CID, said: “We are still carrying out an extensive investigation and are determined to identify those involved, as we do believe there is still a suspect outstanding.

“We have been carrying out searches at a number of addresses in the Weymouth area and are continuing to appeal for anyone with information that can assist our investigation to contact police.”

There have been no injuries reported to police.

Enquiries are still ongoing to establish what firearm was involved.

Inspector Steve Yeoman, of Weymouth police, said: “I understand that residents will be concerned given the nature of this incident. However, I want to reassure the local community that we still believe there is no wider threat to members of the public and a thorough investigation is ongoing to identify those involved.

“Officers from the local neighbourhood policing team will continue to have an increased presence in the area and can be approached with any concerns.”

Yesterday, residents spoke of their shock as police launched an investigation and cordoned off part of their road.

As reported in the Echo, residents of Marsh Road reported hearing gun fire early on Tuesday evening.

Police, including armed response officers, were called to the scene.

Investigations continued yesterday as police moved to reassure the community there was no threat to the wider public and an extensive investigation was underway to identify those involved.

A cartridge was found at the scene by officers who cordoned off part of Marsh Road and part of the ground floor of Asda’s multi-storey car park to allow crime scene investigators to examine the area.

It is understood an air weapon was used in the incident. It has not been recovered.

“There will be a heavy police presence in the area as officers carry out their investigations but at this stage we believe those involved were known to each other and there is not any wider threat to members of the public.”

Inspector Steve Yeoman, of Weymouth police, added: “We understand this incident will have caused some concern for the community, but I would like to reassure members of the public that an extensive investigation is being carried out to identify those involved.
