The Society of Dorset Men presented a cheque to volunteer management team members at Chickerell Library.

Read Easy Weymouth and Portland is a local community group which recruits and trains volunteer coaches and pairs them with adults from the area who either cannot read or struggle with reading.

The coaching is free and flexible.

The scheme is currently upgrading their programme to use Turning Pages Manuals, which is a programme commissioned by The Shannon Trust and aimed specifically at adults.

Turning Pages has been piloted in other Read Easy groups and is proving to be beneficial and ensures the best outcome for learners.

The group has also started a schedule of training for volunteer coaches to enable them to deliver the programme.

The donation from the Society of Dorset Men will enable the group to continue the training schedule to include more coaches and purchase more sets of Turning Pages manuals and reading books to enable more readers to move into this programme.

Andrew Prowse, vice chairman of The Society of Dorset Men, said: "I am constantly amazed to see how much effort is made by local people to support local voluntary services.

"When we heard of the outstanding work being done to support adults in this way, we knew we had to give them our support."
