A total of 8,600kg of litter was collected from Weymouth Beach over the bank holiday weekend, much less than the early May bank holiday total of 13,000kg.

Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) said they had an easier job collecting rubbish this time with more visitors appearing to take their rubbish away with them.

A spokesman for DWP said: “We are very pleased at how the last weekend went. In the run-up we did some pro-active communications about being responsible with your litter; to take it home with you and we thank those people who took notice of this.

“The litter collected on the first May bank holiday was 13,000kg and for the last one we gathered 8,600kg.

“Over the bank holiday weekends, we have two crews (6am-2.30pm and 11am-7.30pm) looking after the beach and promenade from the Pavilion to Bowleaze Cove. There is also a sweeper vehicle, beach rake and litter bin collection vehicle. From 5pm every day the litter bin collection vehicle empties bins along the sea front and the main town (St Marys Street and St Thomas Street).”

Cllr Jason Osborne said: “It’s good news. It’s nice to see people are taking on board that our beaches are not a rubbish tip and that they’re taking rubbish away with them.”However, we still have a long way to go and there are still people out there not picking up their litter and taking it away with them.

“I would like to reiterate, please do take your litter with you because we want to keep our beach in pristine condition.”
