A lone sailor was rescued in the early hours of Saturday after getting into trouble.

Weymouth RNLI reported that it was contacted by Solent Coastguard at around 1.40 am on Saturday, following a Mayday call.

The call had been made by a lone sailor aboard a 21-foot yacht on passage from Dartmouth to Portland; the sailor had run into trouble after his engine and sailing rig both failed.

The man told the Coastguard that he estimated himself to be six miles south-south-west of Portland Bill. It transpired that this was false; Weymouth lifeboat deputy coxswain Trevor Broker eventually found the stranded vessel some 16 miles south-east of the bill.

Once on scene, the volunteer crew of the lifeboat attached a tow line and the yacht was brought back to Weymouth harbour, arriving at 7.30 am. The sailor was reportedly in good health.
