D-DAY COMMEMORATION

A D-Day Commemoration will be taking place at The Keep Military Museum from 11am onwards today (6).

BOOK SALE

A book sale will be held at Dorset County Hospital from 10am until 12pm today (6).

It will be held outside the Cardiology Unit, South Wing, Level 1 and is supporting Friends of Dorset County Hospital.

MONSTER SUMMER FETE

A summer fete will be held at the Holy Trinity Parish Centre on Culliford Road.

The fete will run from 2pm until 4.30pm on Saturday, June 9 and everyone is welcome.

TAKING CENTRE STAGE

THE Durnovia Silver Band will be performing in the Borough Gardens once again.

They will be taking to the band stand from 2.30pm onwards on Sunday, June 10.

TRACING ANCESTORS

A talk by Jane Fox on tracing London ancestors will be held at the Dorset History Centre.

It will be held on Monday, June 11.

Doors will open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start and admission will cost £2.

THE HUMOROUS RAILWAYS

Peter Hammond will be giving a humorous railway talk to the Members of Dorchester Evening Townswomen’s Guild.

It will be held at Manor Park First School on Monday, June 11 and is entitled ‘Oh Mr Porter’.

The talk will begin at 7.40pm.

Visitors are welcome at a cost of £3.

HUMAN CARGO

An evening of migratory stories and songs will be held at Shire Hall on Wednesday, June 13.

The evening, entitled 'Human Cargo' will be in aid of local refugee support groups.

Doors will open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start.

DIABETES QUESTIONS

People with any diabetes questions can pop into the Dorford Centre between 7pm and 9pm on Thursday, June 14.

An 'ask the clinicians' event has been organised, supporting Diabetes UK.

WHAT MAKES AN EFFECTIVE CRIMINAL?

A talk on what makes an effective criminal has been arranged at Brownsword Hall in Pummery Square in Poundbury.

The talk will be given by Rob Beckly and it will be held on Friday, June 22.

Doors will open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

OPEN DAY AT COLLEGE

Kingston Maurward will once again be hosting an open day at the college.

It will be held from 10am until 5pm on Sunday, June 24.

Entry will be free and there will be music by the lake, food and drink, trade stands, an animal park, dog shows and lots of demonstrations.

INSPIRING POETRY

MEMBERS of the New Hardy Players will be reading inspiring seasonal poetry by Thomas Hardy and other associated writers.

The event has been organised by the National Trust and will run from 3pm until 4pm at Max Gate.

It will be held on Thursday, June 7.

MARKET DAYS

A number of markets are regularly held in Dorchester.

A weekly market is held in Fairfield car park on Weymouth Avenue. It runs from 8am to 3pm every Wednesday.

A farmers’ market is held on the first Saturday of each month at Poundbury from 9am until 1pm and on the fourth Saturday of each month in South Street, from 9am to 4pm.

A country market is also held at the Corn Exchange every Friday from 8.30am until 11am and a vintage market on the second Sunday of every month (May to October) from 12noon to 4pm at Dorchester Curiosity Centre on the Grove Trading Estate.

CHARITY WALK

A SUMMER walk has been organised to support Home-Start West Dorset.

The walk will take participants from Dorchester’s Maiden Castle to Martinstown, and back. Meet at Maiden Castle car park at 1.15pm, for a 1.30pm start.

The leisurely walk will cover approximately 6.5km and take just over an hour and a half.

The walk is also family and doggy friendly - but not suitable for pushchairs.

It will be held on Sunday, June 10.

QUARTET RETURN

THE Dorchester Piano Quartet will be performing at the Corn Exchange in July.

Jenifer Curiel (violin), Pasha Willis (viola), Sally Flann (cello), Peter Oakes (piano) with Elizabeth Drew (clarinet) will be performing on Thursday, July 12 from 1pm.

The Dorchester Piano Quartet return for the second of their regular visits to Dorchester Arts. They will be joined for the first time by Elizabeth Drew, one of the regular members of Kokoro, teh contemporary music ensemble of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

WOODLAND WALK

A NUMBER of regular walks are held at Thorncombe Woods.

These regular gentle strolls look at the landscape using senses such as touch, sound and smells to enable those involved to discover the reserve. All welcome, including those with dementia and their carers.

The next walk will be held on Tuesday, July 17.

Those interested should meet at Hardy's Birthplace Visitor Centre.
