The Jailhouse Café at Portland's Verne Prison is set to close at the end of this month.
The announcement was made on the café's Facebook page last night by chairman Rachel Barton.
The post says: “Expia Ltd has reluctantly made the decision to close the The Jailhouse café here at Portland. The voluntary board of directors took the decision because the charity is not meeting its charitable aims and objectives, namely to rehabilitate prisoners before their release.
She added: “We would like to thank you all for your support over the years. Jailhouse café at Guys Marsh near Shaftesbury will remain open and we hope that you will continue to support our work there.”
The café was first opened in 2011 as part of a scheme to help rehabilitate prisoners by teaching them catering skills.
The last day of its operation will be Friday June 29.
It follows last month's announcement that the Verne prison will reopen later this year as a jail exclusively for sex offenders.
