A new home has been found for a community centre in Weymouth's Park District.

As reported earlier this month, possibilities of a new location for the Park Community Centre on Chelmsford Street were being explored.

Reverend Tom Coopey, vicar of St John's Church in Weymouth, who own the building, said they had placed on offer on another building in the area.

In an update, Reverend Coopey confirmed that their offer has now been accepted and that building the centre will be relocating to is the former St John's vicarage, which is currently a language school.

Reverend Coopey explained that the three-story Victorian building is a more suitable venue and will be able to be used for a wide variety of community projects and will provide a much-needed venue for youth work.

Reverend Coopey said: "The new community centre will offer an accessible, flexible and welcoming space, which will make an excellent venue for a wide range of community activities.

“The prominent position of the new centre, along with the church and its grounds will provide an attractive, welcoming focal point for the community. We are excited about the many different ways in which the whole site will be used for the good of our community.”

The news means that the church’s current venue for community work, the Park Community Centre, will be put on the market.

Reverend Coopey added: "The Park Centre has served the community well over many years. The Weymouth Waterside Forum and the church continue to use the venue to run popular and essential services.

“We will be sorry to leave the Park Centre, but we are fully confident that the move will provide an even better community facility. We will continue to serve our local community, and hope that the current users of the Park Centre will continue to run their groups at the new venue.”

The church will be holding a public meeting to outline the new plans in more detail on Monday, June 25.

The meeting will be held at the Park Community Centre, starting at 7pm and everyone is welcome.
