A team of midwives is celebrating as the number of women giving birth at home soars above the national average.

Dorset County Hospital's Cygnet Homebirth Team marked their third anniversary, where they revealed that 10.2 per cent of women in West Dorset are now choosing to give birth at home.

The national home birth rate is just 2.1 per cent.

Lead midwife Tara Pointer-Putt said: “We know from national research that home birth is associated with better outcomes and less intervention than hospital birth for women with straightforward pregnancies.

“We want as many families as possible to benefit from our service so obviously we’re delighted to find that we’ve grown to have one of the highest homebirth rates in the country.”

The team of six midwives, pictured with Dorset County Hospital’s Head of Midwifery, Jo Hartley, enjoyed a tea party with many of the families they have cared for. The team host a home birth information evening on the first Thursday of each month which is open to all. Call 01305 253169 or email homebirth@dchft.nhs.uk for more information.
