I know it has been said many times before that Weymouth lacks joined up thinking, but recent news once again highlights this.

Plans are mooted to re-vamp the railway station area and another for the Pavilion Peninsular.

There are also plans to prevent flooding in the harbour area. Why not look at them as a whole?

Currently we have busses running from the Kings Statue and outside Debenhams.

We have a large bus station, which is in fact only a garage, not a terminus.

We have a railway station on a tricky one way road network around The Park District away from the bus connections and we have a litter and weed infested entrance to it from the tramway with a red light warning trains [which have never run since the old King died] to stop.

Whatever happens at the Pavilion (and why not a Gunwharf type development?) the Esplanade and King Street will have to be dug up for the services.

Think BIG! Why not move the train station, bus depot and some of the car parks nearby to the current “Park and Ride”, extend the tramway along the seafront (installing fairy lights on the way) whilst relaying the services for the Pavilion, and extending it to the “new” transport hub thus making a fast tramway loop which would serve the town, be a great tourist attraction, reduce town traffic, and create a large amount of available land.

Pie in the sky? Perhaps, but without vision nothing will happen. The longest journey starts with the first step. Why not make that a clean up and weeding session on the tramway in King Street? A last moan from me. Why on earth are WPBC bent on ignoring their history?

Queen Elizabeth I ordered a Royal Charter to create the Borough of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis.

Now is the chance to restore this historic twinning with a newly named Weymouth and Melcombe Regis Towns Council.
