A cheaper and quicker scheme to protect crumbling walls in Weymouth Harbour is close to being agreed.

The new scheme includes building a sheet steel pile wall immediately in front of the existing wall with reinforced concrete infill between the two.

The Harbour Board will be told next Wednesday that planning, conservation area and marine licence applications are being prepared and a consultation is being carried out with local businesses likely to be affected.

The Harbour Board say that subject to agreement the main construction work has been provisionally programmed for a three-month period in 2019.

Priority areas for repairs include Ferry Steps which it is hoped could start in the autumn or winter of this year, followed by work at Nelson’s Wharf.

Harbour Master Keith Howorth said in his annual report: “The year has continued its recent pattern of being challenging with a high level of activity. The financial pressures of running the harbour are a primary concern. This is likely to be the case for some time as the harbour evolves alongside the town developments but there have been some very positive steps in looking to the future. The harbour staff remain enthusiastic and committed to providing the best service. Consultation with the harbour users remains vital in the way ahead.”
