Weymouth and Portland armed forces day has kicked off in fine military fashion today.

Veterans, organisations and enthusiasts came together to pay tribute to the armed forces and remember those who gave their lives at a Ceremony at the Cenotaph on the seafront shortly after 11am this morning led by Councillor Gill Taylor, the mayor of Weymouth and Portland.

During the ceremony, a special plaque created by Joy Stanley was unveiled to commemorate local residents who had died while serving their country since 1945.

Visitors also gathered at a military display at the Pavilion on Saturday showcasing a variety of historic military vehicles.

The weekends festivities are being organised by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council along the Ministry of Defence who contributed a grant of £6,500.

Councillor Richard Kosior, Tourism and Culture Briefholder at Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, said: "Weymouth and Portland is very proud to have the event skills and community support to stage one of the country's leading and most popular annual veteran's events.

"The borough and its residents embrace every aspect of the celebrations and give a warm and hospitable welcome to many thousands of veterans, armed forces personnel and their visiting family and friends from around Britain and overseas."

The warm sunshine has also brought thousands of visitors to Weymouth seafront from across Dorset and beyond.
