Torrential rain and thunderstorms could be seen across parts of Dorset today, the Met Office has warned.

A yellow weather warning – meaning ‘be aware’ - has been issued for parts of Purbeck, Bournemouth, Poole between 12pm and 7pm today.

The Met Office said the storms were likely to break out this afternoon before fading away by early evening.

Between 20 to 30mm of rain in one hour is possible in some places.

They said there is a “slight chance” that power cuts could occur and other services to homes and businesses could be lost.

Flooding and lightning strikes could also occur, the Met Office says, which could lead to delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

They added: “There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.”
