There was sunshine and high spirits as crowds packed the harbourside to watch England emerge victorious in the World Cup quarter finals.

The atmosphere was electric as football fans gathered en masse to cheer on the home side as they took on Sweden on Saturday.

England beat the opposition 2-0 and will now be heading to the semi-finals on Wednesday.

For the World Cup, Rendezvous has erected a big screen next to the harbour bridge for crowds to watch the game.

This is only the third time in history and the first time since 1990 England have made it to the semi-finals.

Holly Adams said she has been to Rendezvous and the harbourside to watch every England game so far.

"I come for the atmosphere. Everyone's here for it and the atmosphere is amazing. You have to be here to watch it," she said.

Paul Birch and Daniel Laing headed down to the venue with both their families to watch the game.

"It's the best view in town," Paul said. "Especially up on the balconies - that's why we are here. The atmosphere is ridiculous."

There was a tense atmosphere as the game kicked off but on the half an hour mark, a header from Harry took the Lions into the lead.

Dele Alli secured the home sides victory with a second goal in the 58th minute.

Sweden's ambassador to the UK congratulated England on their victory.

Torbjorn Sohlstrom tweeted: "Congratulations England. You had the stronger team today, and a great goalkeeper. When I have digested the result, I will support Three Lions."

England's next match will be the semi-final on Wednesday (11). Kick off will be at 7pm.
