It was an early start for volunteers at Weymouth RNLI as they were called to help a yacht in difficulties near to Portland Bill.

The Weymouth RNLI All-weather lifeboat was launched at 1am today (11) at the request of Solent Coastguard to go to the assistance of the yacht.

The lifeboat was on scene with the yacht at 1.36am in position three miles SE of Portland Bill.

The volunteer crew quickly established that the crew of the vessel were all safe and well. They then passed a line and towed the vessel back to Weymouth Harbour arriving at 3.30am where they were met by Wyke Coastguard CRT who helped to tie the vessel up and took details.

With the yacht safely moored up the lifeboat returned to its berth where it was refuelled and made ready for the next shout.
