One of the biggest event's in Bridport's diary is edging closer but organisers still need you to get involved.

Organisers of Bridport Carnival are calling for more entries for this year's procession.

Started in 1971, the carnival has been a firm favourite in the town's calendar ever since and is said to be the town's biggest, free event.

But, this year, more people are needed if the event is to be a huge celebration in the town.

The carnival procession is due to take place on Saturday, August 18, followed by the torchlight parade on Sunday, August 19. Carnival-goers will then be able to head down to West Bay to enjoy the traditional fireworks display while a bonfire is lit on the beach.

This year's carnival will welcome back all the firm favourites, with quizzes, bingo, skittles and darts events being held at various locations in the town in the week prior to the big event.

A teddy bear picnic and family disco will keep the little ones happy and live music will provide entertainment on both evenings.

This year's carnival royalty, chosen just last week, will be officially crowned after the procession.

Ellie May Loveless will lead the team as Queen, while Abigail Sanderson is next in line as Princess. Millie Frampton and Faye Lodge have been chosen as this year's attendants.

Chairman of the carnival committee, Shaun Fox, has been involved in carnival for more than 40 years. He said: "People can expect the usual favourites and in the lead-up to the weekend and then we will have the parade and torchlight procession. Carnival is always well-attended and Bridport in particular, I think, is known for its community spirit. There's a good atmosphere."

Organisers are hoping everyone will get involved this year - and there are many ways to do so.

As well as float and walking entries, volunteers are needed to help co-ordinate the procession. Schools, clubs and individuals are encouraged to get involved and take part in the main procession.

Each year, funds raised through Bridport Carnival are handed out to a range of good causes.
