Over in the Dorset Echo we've been following the story of the Jubilee Hall and the Gaumont cinema and theatre in Weymouth town centre.

So it seems timely to share these pictures of Weymouth town centre from the late 1980s, thanks to regular Looking Back contributor Geoff Pritchard.

In this first wave of pictures you may recognise the White Hart pub in Weymouth town centre, but back then there was a completely different street scene before the 70,000 sq ft Debenhams development and 30,000 sq ft nine screen Cineworld cinema so familiar now existed.

Some of you may remember some of the shops in Lower Bond Street, as photographed by Geoff in 1989. They are: Times Furnishing, Silereen City, Golden Eagle (venue for Jumping Jimmy Thunder!), the Lamb and Flag (later Aggie Westons) and Kennedy's Builder Merchants.

Dorset Echo photographer Finnbarr Webster, a former Wey Valley schoolboy, remembers doing a week's work experience at Kennedy's Builder Merchants in 1987.

He said: "I remember working with Darren and the team sourcing and delivering building materials, I particularly remember Darren showing me how to deliver a sink via a motorbike. They would normally use a lorry but due to a customer's urgent requirements Darren tied it on the back of his motorbike and the weight made it wheelie the bike all the way down Commercial Road!"

We've also got some pictures of the houses on Commercial Road awaiting demolition, the rear of Commercial Road and the side entrance to the Regent.

We'll be sharing more of Geoff's pictures next week.
