As I was unable to attend the W&PC meeting on Tuesday, I made a point of asking at the council offices if I could send in a comment regarding the public toilet proposals on the Esplanade but was told there would be no discussion about the subject and that it was on the agenda for information only.

Today, however, I read that the mid-range proposal for new toilets near the Kings Statue on Weymouth seafront has been given council backing.

The two ‘modular’ toilets at the Pier Bandstand and Greenhill would be welcome by the end of this financial year BUT why is the seafront yet again sidelined until at least 2020 when the lease runs out on the current site, which houses the current poor standard toilets for the less able.

Presumably after that date these facilities will be demolished and any new facilities will take a year or so to be built.

What if anything, I wonder, will be in their place as a temporary measure? Good for Cllr Ray Nowak saying that ‘a delay could be tolerated whilst the work was carried out’. Really, how would he like to be in a position of needing a toilet and there not being one? Perhaps he should try sometime. We do not need another café in a two-storey building, adding £300,000 to the bill, thank you, we already have plenty but DO need these facilities and in a seamless way.

No talk of temporary accessible ones in this area, I note. We are not allowed, it seems, to discriminate against those who maybe transgender but, it appears, we can discriminate against those who are less able. What are we coming to? WEYMOUTH CARER
