Motorists are warned to expect disruption on a busy route in Weymouth as a two-week roadworks project gets underway.

Dorset County Council says from Saturday July 28, disruption is expected on the A354 Portland Road in Wyke Regis.

Temporary lights will be in place 24 hours-a-day for safety of highway users and the workforce whilst sewer and water services are connected in the road to feed a new retail site at the former Texaco filling station.

Due to the nature of the work, lights will not be able to be removed whilst the excavation is open in the road. The lights will be manually controlled 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday, and also at weekends.

Dorset Highways have instructed extended working hours including weekends to have the work completed as soon as possible – expected to be by Sunday, August 12.

The work has been scheduled during the holidays in consultation with key stakeholders; as it was deemed inappropriate for work to take place in such close proximity to schools in the area where the extra pedestrian traffic generated would cause undue delay at peak times.

A controlled pedestrian crossing on Portland Road will remain in place for the duration of the works.

Williams Avenue will also be closed during the work, with a diversion via Fairview Road and Sunnyside Road.
