Good causes have benefited from a £16,000 windfall from a Weymouth street festival.

Fayre in the Square, organised by the Rotary Club of Weymouth, is an annual festival of music, food and family fun.

The spring bank holiday weekend extravaganza is based around Hope Square and the harbourside, and this year it was back for the fifth time.

This year's event chairman Roger Fry said it raised more than £16,000 for local good causes and charities.

A presentation night was held at the Rotary Club's Pilgrim House headquarters in Hope Square.

Mr Fry said: "The club was inundated with requests for support with a total of thirty three local groups benefitting from the success of the Fayre in the Square event.

"The beneficiaries came from a very diverse range, including scouts, brownies, volunteers carrying out community work, caring organisations – and youth groups encouraging girls' football and a taekwondo club supporting local GB athletes and juniors with hopes of becoming Olympians. This is of course to name but a few."

The evening was hosted by singer and Rotarian Darron Garnett, who managed to get every participant to tell a story about their particular organisation.

In keeping with previous years a raffle was held with the proceeds going to one lucky organisation. This year the winner was Crossways Youth Centre.

Mr Fry said: "As ever we are very grateful for our sponsors, Gladstone Jewellers, SSAFA and Sealife Centre for their wonderful raffle prizes, which helped to raise nearly £300 for the evening.

"Not to forget the main event's sponsors headed by the Weymouth BID, drinks companies Thatchers and Tolchards and of course the Echo for giving us the encouragement to put on the event."

Organisers said the winner of the free holiday draw in the programme was a couple from Weymouth. They won a break at Haven Littlesea, which they were delighted to accept.

Already work is beginning on next year's event – the dates are May 25 and 26, 2019.
