A woman facing terminal cancer has raised more than £1,400 for the hospice that is caring for her.

Lucy Aaron, who has stage four bowel cancer, had her head shaved in aid of Weldmar Hospicecare.

She had originally planned to brave the clippers in Hope Square in Weymouth, but was too poorly to go out and instead, Gail Broome, manager of Gunz Barbers, came to her home.

Lucy’s friends were also on hand to take buckets to Hope Square to collect money from kind-hearted passers-by for the charity.

Lucy said “We always used to spend Sunday afternoons listening to the live music in Hope Square, it is something that I have always enjoyed, especially after a drink or two. I decided to have my head shaved there because I always know there is a good crowd when Replay are performing and I was hoping to raise money from collection buckets.

“I was too ill to go to Hope Square in the end but Gail, from Gunz Barbers, came to my house instead and shaved it there. My friend, Jan Gale and her daughter Tina, still held a collection outside Brewers Quay on the day where £414.74 was raised. We also set up a Justgiving page to collect donations, and lots of people supported us through this too.”

Lucy was diagnosed with bowel cancer in February last year and said she was waiting patiently for her wound to heal. But as time passed, she had discovered that the cancer had spread to her liver, lung and possible ovary. That didn’t stop Lucy going through with the challenge and raising money for Weldmar.

She added: “I was expecting to raise a couple of hundred pounds but to raise over £1,400 is incredible. A lot of my old friends who I used to go to school with have supported me and I just want to thank everyone who has given donations to Weldmar. Many thanks to Gail from Gunz Barbers on St Mary’s Street, Weymouth, my dear friend Jan Gale for her help to get the challenge underway and all the people who have donated.”

Matt Smith, director of fundraising and marketing for Weldmar, said: “We are extremely grateful for the support of Lucy and her friends for raising such a fantastic sum of money for Weldmar Hospicecare. These donations unable us to continue providing care for people like Lucy today and in the future. It really does make a massive difference.”
