A village which welcomed home all of its serviceman during the First and Second World War will hold a special commemorative service this weekend.

Langton Herring near Weymouth is the only ‘Doubly Thankful’ village in Dorset. This means it was the only village to welcome back all the men and women who fought in both the First and Second World Wars.

This Sunday a thanksgiving service and celebration will be held at the church at 3.30pm.

The celebration will include the tying of ribbons in the churchyard and around the church. Each ribbon will include one of the names of the 51 known men and women who served in each World War and returned to the village.

Between them they received six awards - two O.B.E.’s, one M.B.E., one military cross, one D.S.O. and one D.S.C.

As part of the commemorative event, the church is inviting villagers to share their memories with the public.

Martin Pearson, from St Peter’s said, ‘We would love to hear from anyone who knows stories of family or friends, about those villagers who survived the World Wars, or other conflicts. We will be displaying information about the history of some villagers and their branches of the armed services as part of our Doubly Thankful celebration.’”

After the service there will be tea and cakes served in the village hall.
