Police have moved to reassure the community following a dramatic few hours when armed police descended on Weymouth to investigate a stabbing.

As reported, there were a number of police raids in the town on Saturday following a violent assault at a house in Bath Street around 10.30am.

As well as a major police presence in Bath Street and Commercial Road, officers – including armed response teams – descended on the busy railway station to search a train.

They also went to the seafront, Lodmoor Hill and Chickerell Road in different operations to carry out enquiries.

The victim, a local man in his 40s, suffered non life threatening injuries.

Three people arrested on Saturday have been released under investigation.

Weymouth and Portland Neighbourhood Inspector Steve Yeoman, said: “A detailed investigation is underway into the incident, led by detectives in Weymouth CID.

"We fully understand the concern in the community due to the large police presence in the area at the time, which was entirely necessary to investigate what occurred.

“I’d like to praise our officers for their swift and professional response.”

Insp Yeoman added: “We are very grateful for the public’s support and those who have assisted with the police investigation and I would ask anyone who has any information about the incident to contact Dorset Police. Anyone with any concerns can also approach any officer from the neighbourhood policing team who will be happy to address any issues.”

The trio arrested were two men aged 20 and 21, and a 16-year-old boy, all from the London area. The 21-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and the two others were arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent.
