A MAJOR exhibition with world class artist Philip Sutton begins this weekend in Bridport.

See world class art on your doorstep this summer when Bridport Arts Centre hosts an exhibition of work by the artist and Royal Academician Philip Sutton in its Allsop Gallery.

Born in 1928, and having grown up in humble surroundings in London’s, East End, Philip Sutton left school at 14 and briefly worked in a drawing office before completing his national service during the Berlin Airlift.

After attending the Slade School of Arts, where his contemporaries were Craigie Aitcheson, Michael Andrews and Euan Uglow, Sutton’s optimism and his stylistic freedom swiftly attracted an international following.

Philip’s work has been displayed in The Royal Academy, The Tate, The Globe, The Welsh Assembly, Kensington Palace and the UK Parliament. He's best known for his large and colourful paintings of landscapes, flowers and people.

Philip said: “When I walk around the Bridport shows I feel happy. How brilliant to be able to show my work in such superb venues. The canvases look better than ever with a seaside breeze and summer light shining above the green dorset hills.”

*Philip Sutton at 90 runs form Saturday August 11 to Saturday October 6. It has been made possible due to the kindness of the Sutton family and funds raised from the arts centre’s 2017 Secret Art Sale fundraiser.
