Here's what's happening in Dorchester over the coming weeks

TEA WITH HARDY

Mrs Hardy is inviting you to tea in the garden at Max Gate, with some special guests advocating Votes for Women and a short performance by the Hardy Players.

The event will be held on Thursday, September 13 and Friday, September 14 from 4pm until 5pm.

Booking is not needed and the event is free but normal admission into Max Gate applies.

A suggested donation to the New Hardy Players is encouraged.

POETRY AFTERNOON

On Saturday, September 15 Tim Laycock and members of the William Barnes Society will read Dorset dialect poetry by William Barnes.

Again booking is not needed and the event is free but normal admission applies.

It will run from 2.30pm until 3.30pm.

A suggested donation to the William Barnes Society of £3 is encouraged.

ACTION ON POVERTY

Dorchester Poverty Action was set up 27 years ago by Churches Together in Dorchester. It aims to help those suffering such hidden financial hardship, isolation creates an added burden.

The charity seeks out causes of poverty and ways to tackle them. It makes grants of up to £200 on request from a care agency (including health visitors, social workers, church leaders, tenancy support, CAB) to those in urgent need.

TIME TO CLEAN

A church cleaning has been organised at St Peter's Church on Saturday, September 1 from 9.30am.

Light refreshments will be available and the cleaning will last for approximately an hour.

LIGHT EXHIBITION

An exhibition entitled 'There is Only Light' will be held at the Borough Gardens House from Monday, August 20 until Monday, August 27.

The exhibition will see styles ranging from landscape and documentary to abstract and wildlife.

Admission will be free and it will be open daily from 10am until 5pm.

SUMMER CONCERT

Tony Lowe will be returning to Dorchester for the third of four summer concerts in Dorset.

Everyone is invited to pop along and relax to the songs of Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble, Tom Jones and many more.

He will be performing at Dorchester Borough Gardens from 2.30pm until 5pm on Sunday, August 19.

The event will be supporting Weldmar Hospicecare.

BARN DANCE

A barn dance has been organised to support the Friends of Dorset County Hospital and the work they do.

The dance will also see the return of Ceilidh band Black Sheep.

It will be held at the Corn Exchange from 7.30pm on Friday, August 25.

Tickets will also include a ploughman's supper.

FASHION SHOW

A vintage fashion show will be coming to Dorchester in August to help raise funds for a vital trust.

The show will be held at Duke’s Auctioneers in Brewery Square.

There will a host of vintage accessories and clothes on show.

There will be cream teas provided by Yalbury and Yvons Café from 4pm and 5.30pm with free entry.

The ticketed fashion show will start at 6pm with a reception and canapes, followed by the show at 7.30pm.

The event will be raising funds for The Alcohol Education Trust.

It will be held on Thursday, August 30.

GARDEN FUN

Families are invited to enjoy a picnic in the Borough Gardens from 10am until 3pm on Saturday, September 8.

The event has been organised by Stepping into Nature and is being supported by Dorchester Town Council, Natural Choices and LiveWell Dorset.

There will be music all day as well as 'give it a go' nature-based activities.

SUPPORT GROUP

A Dementia Support Group meeting will be held at Rowan Cottage.

The group was launched by Age UK Dorchester and is open to anyone who has been affected by dementia, whether they themselves have it, or if they support someone else who does.

The group will be from 10.30am until 12pm on Monday, September 10.

It is also an opportunity to meet others in a similar situation and a chance to talk about issues that may be affecting you or those around you.

The group will be very informal and led by those who attend.

Tea and coffee will also be available.
