A Bridport cyclist undertook a big cycle challenge in memory of their late mother.

Jo Summerfield of West Bay successfully completed the 100 kilometre night time cycle challenge in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).

Jo, a production operative at AmSafe Bridport, decided to participate in the London Nightrider cycle challenge in memory of her mother, Gemma Murley, who was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2015 and sadly died just a year later.

The challenge saw more than 1000 participants raising money for a wide variety of worthy causes.

Jo and her group began the challenge at 11pm from the Olympic Park Velodrome in Stratford, and after cycling a 100 kilometre loop through central London, finished at 5am the following morning.

Joanna said: "I really enjoyed seeing the sights like the London Eye and Big Ben through Central London.

"The last fifteen miles were tough, especially the cobbles through Wapping, but the bacon butty at the end tasted that much better.

"I am very grateful to everyone who has supported me and donated to the MNDA.

"Next year, I hope to complete the Liverpool Nightrider 100 kilometre, and one day, cycle from John O'Groats to Land's End to raise further funds."

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a degenerative condition that affects the brain and nerves, causing weakness and muscle wastage which gets progressively worse over time. It affects one in 300 people during their lifetime.

The condition is fatal, and due to there being no cure, can significantly shorten life expectancy.

THE MNDA is the only charity which focuses on improving access to care and campaigning for those living with or affected by MND.

AmSafe Bridport, who focus on engineered textiles for the aerospace and defence industry, discovered Joanna's fundraising plans and decided to sponsor her efforts by pledging to match any donations made by its employees as well as contributing an additional lump sum.

Jason Abbott, AmSafe Bridport president, said: "Many congratulations on Jo's amazing achievement in raising so much money for the MNDA, which is both a highly personal and worthwhile cause.

"When we found out about Jo's planned participation in the Nightrider Challenge, we were keen to show our support by sponsoring her.

"All of us at AmSafe Bridport are proud of her achievements and delighted we could help by providing sponsorship."

So far, Jo has raised £1102, and is still fundraising through uk.virginmoneygiving.com/JoSummerfield
