The appointment of a town clerk for the new Weymouth Town Council could be made by the end of the month.

Interviews are currently being held for the new job, which pays around £68,000 a year.

Borough council leader Cllr Jeff Cant said that there had been a lot of interest in the position and a field of ‘good quality candidates.’

Interviews for other positions will follow later in the year with the new authority likely employ around fifty people making it the second, or third, biggest town council in the country when it comes into being in April next year.

Resident Ken Whatley told councillors at the borough management meeting on Tuesday that trying to find out what was happening with the new council and what it would take over from the borough council was almost impossible.

“It has appeared in the Press that a list has been made but it’s not yet public.

“This is worse than Brexit, trying to find out what is going on…it’s unfair to staff and residents just don’t know what is happening.”

Cllr Cant told him that the salary was justified because the new council would have a lot of staff and setting it up and getting it to run efficiently would be complex.

“We have identified a lot of services which may be transferred…as soon as we get a better picture we will present it,” he said, adding that the earliest date was likely to be October.
